Moving Out Of State? Use Our Ultimate Checklist

Relocating is always stressful, and it could potentially be more challenging when moving out of state. Whether you’re relocating for a new job opportunity or pursuing further education, the process involves meticulous planning and organization.

We’ve compiled a list of aspects to consider for your move. For a hassle-free moving experience, consider this checklist for your out-of-state relocation.

Research Your New Location

Before embarking on your journey, conduct thorough research on your destination. Knowing the cost of things, where to find healthcare, fun places, and activities in a new area is crucial. For one thing, it can make it easier for you to adjust to your surroundings. And for another, it will help you budget your monthly expenses.

Understanding these aspects of a new location can help you feel more comfortable and prepared.

Create a Budget

Moving can be an expensive endeavor. Luckily, establishing a budget early on can help you have most things under control. Consider factors such as transportation, packing supplies, and hiring movers.

With an established budget, you will be able to keep track of your expenses. Of course, there is still a chance of having unforeseen expenses, but with a budget, their impact will be manageable. .

Declutter and Downsize:

Go through your closet and make a list of your belongings. After doing so, you can decide what to keep, donate, sell, or discard.

Downsizing before the move not only reduces clutter but also lowers transportation costs. Thus, it’s a two-fold victory. Be ruthless in your decluttering efforts, and only bring items that serve a practical or sentimental purpose.

Hire Professional Movers:

If feasible, consider hiring professional movers to assist with the heavy lifting. Research reputable moving companies. Read reviews, and obtain quotes from multiple companies.

Make sure to look for licensed movers who have the equipment you need for long-distance relocations. You can also look for companies that offer insurance for added security for your transported items.

Notify Relevant Parties:

Inform key stakeholders about your upcoming move, including your employer, landlord, utility providers, financial institutions, and healthcare providers. Make sure to update your address with the postal service and subscription services. This way, they will know where to reach you and you will not miss any important information.

Pack Strategically:

Start packing early and label boxes clearly to streamline the unpacking process. To pack strategically, begin by grouping similar items. Also, make sure to pack a bag of essential items for immediate access upon arrival and keep this bag close to you. If you’re worried about your belongings, you can use padding to protect fragile items during transit.

Handle Logistics

Arrange for transportation of vehicles, pets, and any items that require special handling. If you don’t have much to move and decide to drive to your new location, your logistics will include:

  • Planning your route
  • Account for rest stops and meal breaks
  • Plan your route

Set Up Utilities

Set up electricity, water, gas, internet, and cable at your new home. Transfer or connect these services before moving in. Schedule service activation dates to coincide with your move-in date to ensure a smooth transition.

Notify your Change of Address

This is a crucial step, yet sometimes people forget about it. Submit a change of address form to the postal service. This way, they will forward mail to your new address.

Time for Goodbyes

Take time to say goodbye to friends, colleagues, and relatives who live near your old house. Also an ideal moment to set any outstanding bills, return borrowed items, etc.

Moving out of state demands even more attention than a short-distance move. It requires careful planning, organization, and attention to detail. By following this comprehensive checklist, you can alleviate stress and ensure a smooth transition to your new home. Embrace the excitement of starting anew and embrace the adventure that awaits in your new state.

Dwight, Kidany and Isaac did a tremendous job of completing our move at Connecticut Orthopaedics. They not only moved heavy equipment such as leg press, bikes and cables, beds and physical therapy tables with machines weighing 500 lbs. Tremendous effort and care as they helped moved our Physical Therapy into our new site in Orange, CT. Thank you for your hard work.

Our move with Collegian Movers couldn't have been better. It was a first class operation all the way. George was excellent to work with during the planning stage. He was extremely insightful on all aspects of moving and obviously very experienced working with customers planning a move. Dwight and his moving crew (Leo and Dan) were excellent. They were prompt, friendly and extremely careful with our stuff. They worked extremely hard and made the whole experience a pleasant one for us, which is sometimes not the case when you move. I would highly recommend Collegian Movers to anyone in CT considering a move

We had a WONDERFUL experience with Collegian Movers yesterday! Isaac and his 2 coworkers showed up on time and were super fast- we were both shocked at how quickly they got everything moved for us. They were all very friendly and helpful, and took extra care with our fragile boxes. Also, Collegian Movers had the best prices for our move of anyone around. We will definitely be using this company for our moves in the future, and highly recommend them! 10/10 :)
